AM Wellness Routine
Hello lovelies! I recently asked you guys on my Instagram stories if you would be interested in seeing some posts around the topics of wellness and beauty. I was seriously surprised at HOW interested you all were in these topics! This was also super exciting to me, as I have some tips and tricks that I would really love to share! FULL DISCLAIMER: I am no expert in this area, and I am a total work in progress in terms of personal wellness and self love (real talk, who isn’t?) That said, what better way to continue working on our stunning queen selves than to share our tips, ideas, and hacks with one another?!
If i’m being completely honest… as excited as I am to share my thoughts and ideas on the topic of wellness, it also feels quite vulnerable. Posting selfies and OOTD’s is my norm, but beyond my love of fashion and cute clothes, I can be a little bit of a wellness freak. So please bear with me as I open up and share with you this other side of me that you may not know so well. This side has always been so important, and so ME, but it is definitely outside of my comfort zone to begin sharing it with you all!
I thought I would start with my morning routine. I am a total creature of habit, and also the most aggressive morning person (sorry Mac!) Like sign me up for a good sunrise, but do NOT ask me to be a functioning human past 9pm. Anyways… read on to find out how I like to start my day to feel like a million bucks!
Matcha + OJ
Why not kick things off with a good ol’ dose of vitamin D and caffeine? It may sound like a weird combo, but mixing matcha with your orange juice is seriously the BEST… you can thank me later. This is seriously one of my favourite hacks that I discovered little while ago… it is definitely my go-to way to start my morning . We all know the benefits of vitamin C from orange juice, and matcha is said to have SO many benefits itself, from supporting a healthy heart, brain and skin, to stabilizing mood and energy (no caffeine crashes!) I like to prepare my little magic potion the night before, by mixing 1/2 tsp of quality matcha powder with about 1/2 a cup of orange juice. You can totally add more or less of either depending on how you like it to taste, and how much caffeine you need to get yourself going! I always buy OJ that has probiotics in it, so really I’m killing three birds with one stone. (Without getting too off topic, I also SWEAR by probiotics for so many reasons, but I’m sure you already know that they are the bees knees of wellness!) It can be hard to get the lumps out of the matcha powder… so the trick here is to use a small jar or reusable juice container, add your matcha and OJ, screw the lid on tight, and shake it like you’ve never shook a freaking polaroid picture. Pop it in the fridge and you’re all set for whenever you roll your beautiful butt out of bed the next morning! OH, and yes I still drink coffee afterwards (DUH)… I just try to stick to decaf or half-caf so I’m not even more high-strung than I already am.
This is where my inner zen kicks in. I love to light a scented candle in the AM to get my vibe going for the day. If I can, I take a few minutes to get cozy on the couch with my coffee and brekky while I plan out my day and get myself in the zone. When doing this, there is nothing better than lighting a pretty candle to set the tone, and feel energized and grounded heading into the day! I’ve also been really wanting to try burning Palo Santo wood, I just haven’t gotten around to finding some… has anyone tried this?!
Okay, please don’t laugh at this one… but I am a total quote lover. I always start my day by reading something to get me feeling motivated and inspired. Sometimes its a simple quote on Pinterest that strikes a cord, but lately I have been loving a few different books that share quotes and poems that inspire the crap out of me. Okay maybe that was an aggressive way of putting it, but you know what I mean. If you can get over the cringey-ness of this idea, I definitely recommend finding a book, a motivating human, or an inspiring page on Pinterest/Intagram to look towards as part of your morning ritual. I personally love Cleo Wade… her book is amazing, and she shares some brilliant stuff on social as well!
Dry brushing + Moisturize
Before I hop in the shower, I always dry brush. If you’re new to dry brushing, it is exactly what it sounds like. It is basically a brush with fine bristles that you use when your skin is dry to brush all over your skin. They say to start at the feet and brush in circular motions towards the heart. The benefits are said to improve circulation, support the lymphatic system, clear your pores and help exfoliate, and even boost your energy! At first it feels a little uncomfortable, but if you start slow and gentle you’ll start to get used to it. I have been doing it for almost two years now and I absolutely love it and the way it makes me feel. After I shower, I always make sure to moisturize (with either coconut oil, shea butter lotion, or baby oil), and the combination makes for the perfect “baby’s bottom smooth” skin!
Jade roller + serum
Now for the face! I love using my jade roller to reduce the puffiness under my eyes and brighten my skin. Plus it feels amazing… pretty much a refreshing and cooling massage for the face every morning. Who woulnd’t be down with that? After I jade roll like the beauty queen that I am, I apply my serums and moisturizers. Eye cream is a must in my routine. I am all for laugh lines, but I’d rather save the majority of my wrinkles for a little later in life.
So you probably know by now that I have recently been on the hunt for the PERFECT face sunscreen. Let me tell you… this is no easy feat! I will most likely dedicate a whole post to this topic once I find THE ONE, but for now I am testing out a few contenders. While I have always know the importance of sunscreen, lately it has really kicked in just HOW important it truly is. It may be the fact that there has been so much coverage on chemical vs. mineral sunscreens in the news, or how it has been such a huge topic in the beauty sphere, but the message definitely hits home. At the end of the day, protecting our skin from UV rays (despite the weather being rainy or sunny!) is the number one way to prevent skin cancer, and the most important step in your anti-aging regime. I totally admit that in the past I have been a little too nonchalant about SPF, but I have recently made the commitment to myself to wear sunscreen on (at least) my face every single day.
Makeup (or NOT)
The last step of my morning wellness routine is makeup. Although sometimes (okay maybe more times than you may think…) I skip this step altogether. Some days I truly love to just embrace the “au natural” look, and can’t be fussed to put on makeup. It really isn’t hard to find me in the grocery store or running errands with my glasses on, hair in a scrunchie, bare faced. That said, I do also love getting dolled up! When I put on makeup I do it for me, because it makes me feel good… hey, beauty is totally a part of wellness too! I have a pretty simple makeup routine, but lately I’ve also enjoyed exploring some new beauty products and tricks too. Lipsticks are my guilty pleasure (I probably have over 20!) but weirdly enough, my favourite makeup product is blush. I feel my best when I do my brows, slap on a little concealer, blush, and mascara, and out the door!
Well, there you have it! Naturally, my day to day changes as life gets busy, but these are the things that make me feel good, and get me ready for a kick a** day. No, my routine is not perfect, and it is not the be all end all to my personal wellness, but these little things make ME feel good. Keep in mind that we are all so different in what works for us in our daily routines… I’d love to know what your favourite ways are to start your morning feeling fab!
Thank you so much for reading, and for encouraging and allowing me to open up and share my AM wellness routine! Oh, and stay tuned for my night time routine coming soon!
